چکیده

Mountain permafrost is highly sensitive to changing air temperatures because they affect the thawing depth of the annual active layer, as well as the time and speed of the refreezing process, mainly in the winter. The Long Term Ecological Research Site (LTER) Niwot Ridge and the Critical Zone Observatory Site (CZO) Green Lakes in Colorado, USA, with their high alpine tundra climate and vegetation, offer ideal conditions to study changes of mountain permafrost. The sites provide high quality climate data, together with studies on permafrost since the 1970’s, which make these places rather unique in the US. We present data from our studies on permafrost distribution using different geophysical techniques to portray the shallow subsurface. The data on permafrost and soil temperature are compared with existing models of permafrost distribution and possible thermal degradation, as well as with older data on the existence and distribution of permafrost at these sites. At some locations, we !nd large differences when compared to the older data and the prognostic model. Sites formerly indicated as permafrost in the 1970’s shifted towards sites with annual ice lenses today. We discuss the results and attempt to discern if the observed change is a direct consequence of the current rising air temperatures.

Changing mountain permafrost from the 1970s to today – comparing two examples from Niwot Ridge, Colorado Front Range, USA

Melting mountain permafrost is reported from alpine areas around the world as a direct consequence of rising air temperatures over the past decades. However, alpine sites that offer suffi cient older data to compare with recent conditions are rare. The study site Niwot Ridge, situated at ~ 3600 m a.s.l. in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado, USA, offers permafrost distribution dat...

Dynamics of habitat changes as a result of climate change in Zagros Mountains Range (Iran), a case study on Amphibians

Climate change is currently considered a serious threat for many species and recognized as one of the most important factors in the global biodiversity loss. Among animal groups, amphibians are known to be among the most sensitive groups of vertebrates to climate change due to their inability to travel long distances, and mountain habitat species are more exposed to climate change pressures tha...

A comparison of permafrost prediction models along a section of Trail Ridge Road, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, USA

a r t i c l e i n f o The distribution of mountain permafrost along Trail Ridge Road (TRR) in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, was modeled using 'frost numbers' and a 'temperature of permafrost model' (TTOP) in order to assess the accuracy of prediction models. The TTOP model is based on regional observations of air temperature and heat transfer functions involving vegetation, soil, and ...

Climate change in mountains: a review of elevation-dependent warming and its possible causes

Available observations suggest that some mountain regions are experiencing seasonal warming rates that are greater than the global land average. There is also evidence from observational and modeling studies for an elevation-dependent climate response within some mountain regions. Our understanding of climate change in mountains, however, remains challenging owing to inadequacies in observation...

Water soluble organic aerosols in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, USA: composition, sources and optical properties

Atmospheric aerosols have been shown to be an important input of organic carbon and nutrients to alpine watersheds and influence biogeochemical processes in these remote settings. For many remote, high elevation watersheds, direct evidence of the sources of water soluble organic aerosols and their chemical and optical characteristics is lacking. Here, we show that the concentration of water sol...
